1823 in Germany

1823 in Germany was a quiet year. The many German states were part of the German Confederation, a loose group created after the Napoleonic Wars. Politics were mainly conservative, with limited freedoms and little chance of rapid change. The economy was slowly rebuilding, with farming as the main activity and some towns growing through trade and early industry. People discussed ideas about national unity and reform, but the authorities kept a firm grip on power. There were no big wars in the German lands that year, and the major political changes would come later in the 1830s and 1840s.
