Alpha Eta Rho
Alpha Eta Rho (ΑΗΡ) is a coed, international professional fraternity for college aviation students and professionals. It was founded on April 10, 1929, at the University of Southern California and was the first professional aviation fraternity. Its mission is to connect students with the aviation industry, support education and research, and guide members toward careers in aviation, aerospace engineering, and related fields.
Today, Alpha Eta Rho has more than 140 chapters in the United States and around the world, and more than 50,000 alumni working in airlines, aerospace companies, NASA, and aviation services. The fraternity is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and publishes The Beam, its quarterly newsletter.
Founding and early history
Alpha Eta Rho was started by Earl W. Hill, a USC aviation professor, along with John Bonadiman, Joe Burchman, Adam E. Diehl, Dr. Rudolph Hirschberg, Richard Mogle, and Walter Sykes. Its members were chosen for scholarship, character, and an interest in aviation, and the organization welcomed members without regard to gender, race, religion, or nationality. Charles Lindbergh later served as the fraternity’s first vice president, and Hill led the national organization until his death in 1950. Mogle was the first student president.
The fraternity grew quickly, expanding to campuses such as UCLA, Duke, UNC, Northwestern, Pasadena Junior College, San Diego State, and San Jose State. In 1937 it was incorporated in California as Alpha Eta Rho International Aviation Fraternity, with a headquarters in Los Angeles.
Activities and programs
Chapter activities included guest speakers, weekly luncheons, visits to airplane factories and related industries, and cross-country flights. Some chapters fielded flying teams that competed with other groups. Each year, the fraternity awards a scholarship key to the outstanding member of every chapter, along with other aviation scholarships.
Symbols, colors, and motto
The Greek letters spell "aer" (air). Alpha represents first, Eta honors the seven founders, and Rho symbolizes density and distance, reflecting the strong bonds among members across the aviation industry. The official badge resembles a five-cylinder radial engine with a diagonal propeller, decorated with emeralds and rubies on the cylinder heads; the pledge pin is propeller-shaped. The colors are chrome yellow, red, and black, and the motto is "Collegiate Aviation Leaders of Today... Aviation Industry Leaders of Tomorrow."
Governance and leadership
Alpha Eta Rho is governed by a national board of directors and a National Student Executive Committee. As of 2023, Benjamin O’Brien serves as Chief Executive Officer. The organization maintains more than 140 chapters nationwide and internationally.
