Socorro, Oriental Mindoro
Socorro is a municipality in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. It lies at the junction of Pola Road, about 61 kilometers from Calapan, and covers about 151 square kilometers. The town has around 41,600 residents (2024) and is divided into 26 barangays. Socorro became its own town on June 22, 1963, having previously been part of Pola.
The local government classifies Socorro as a 3rd class municipality. Current leaders are Mayor Nemmen O. Perez and Vice Mayor Allan Kenneth P. Tolentino, with Representative Arnan C. Panaligan. The electorate was around 25,000 voters in 2025.
Economy: Agriculture is the main industry, with crops like rice, fruits, coconuts, and citrus (calamansi, dalandan, pomelo). Rambutan and lanzones are grown as well. Fresh fish comes from Lake Naujan, and the Balut area is also important for fishing. A sizable Mangyan population lives in the more remote areas, with programs to assist them.
Education: The Socorro Schools District Office oversees all public and private schools in the municipality from primary to secondary.
