Aleksandar Ugrenović
Aleksandar Ugrenović (6 November 1883 – 19 November 1958) was a Croatian and Yugoslav forestry professor and a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts. He was born in Petrinja and studied at the University of Zagreb, earning a forestry degree in 1904, a philosophy degree in 1907, and a PhD in philosophy in 1907. From 1907 to 1921 he worked as a forester in Osijek, Slatina and Pakrac.
From 1921 to 1956 he was a full-time professor at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry in Zagreb, teaching about the use of forests for trade and wood industries and about forest policy, with a break during World War II (1941–45). He joined JAZU in 1948 and served on its presidency, as secretary of the Natural Science Department, and as commissioner of the Forestry Section.
Ugrenović edited the Forestry Magazine Šumarski list from 1925 to 1929 and, for a while, the magazine Prirodoslovna istraživanja JA. He started and later led the Forestry Encyclopedia of the Yugoslav Lexicographical Institute in Zagreb. He was involved in several international forestry organizations, including Silva Mediterranea (1922), Commission internationale d'agriculture (1923), Institut internationale d'agriculture (1934) and Union internationale des instituts de recherches forestieres (1936). He died in Zagreb.
