Bagan Datuk District
Bagan Datuk District is the southwesternmost district of Perak, Malaysia. It covers about 951.5 square kilometers and has a population of roughly 70,300 in 2016, increasing to around 82,800 by 2020. The district center is Bagan Datuk town, and the area is bordered by the Perak River to the north and the Bernam River to the south. Neighboring districts include Manjung and Perak Tengah to the northeast, with Sabak Bernam in Selangor to the south.
Geography and economy
- The district sits near major rivers and includes coastal and inland areas. Bagan Datuk is known for its coconuts, and plans include developments like the Bagam Datuk Water City in the broader area.
History
- Bagan Datuk started as part of Hilir Perak. In January 2016, it was made an autonomous sub-district. On June 15, 2016, it was upgraded to a full district, effectively separating from Hilir Perak (Teluk Intan), which still handles municipal works. In August 2016, Sembilan Island joined the district from Manjung. The district’s name was changed from Bagan Datoh to Bagan Datuk, effective January 9, 2017.
Administrative divisions
- The district is divided into four mukims: Bagan Datuk, Hutan Melintang, Rungkup, and Teluk Bharu. It comprises about 46 villages and eight Chinese fishing villages.
Governance and infrastructure
- The Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI) oversees the district’s local government functions. The district includes a number of educational institutions, including Sekolah Kebangsaan Khir Johari in Sungai Sumun.

- Population has grown from about 70,300 in 2016 to around 82,785 by 2020, with a population density of roughly 74 people per square kilometer.
Political representation
- Federal Parliament: Bagan Datuk is represented by the Bagan Datuk federal constituency (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Barisan Nasional/UMNO). The Teluk Intan federal seat is represented by Nga Kor Ming (Pakatan Harapan/DAP).
- Perak State Legislative Assembly: Rungkup (N53) is represented by Shahrul Zaman bin Yahya (BN); Hutan Melintang (N54) by Wasanthee Sinnasamy (Pakatan Harapan/PKR); Changkat Jong (N56) by Nadziruddin Mohamed Bandi (Perikatan Nasional/BERSATU).
