Airport Road, Kozhikode
Airport Road in Kozhikode (Calicut) is a key 20-km route from Thondayad Junction to Calicut Airport. It passes through Palazhi, Pantheeramkavu, Ramanattukara, and Kondotty Thurakkal before reaching the airport.
A long time ago, Kozhikode’s beach area was the city’s center. In the 1970s the downtown moved to Mananchira, and in the 1980s Mavoor Road became the hub. In the 2010s, Thondayad Bypass and the Palazhi area near Airport Road grew into new city centers with lively nightlife.
Thondayad Junction is an important intersection that connects the city to eastern towns and to northern and southern Kerala by express roads. It can be reached from Mavoor Road on its western side.
Palazhi is a fast-growing suburb near the eastern end of the road. It hosts Hilite Township and Hilite Mall, and has establishments like Metro International Cardiac Center and Cradle Maternity Hospital. Palazhi lies about four kilometers from Thondayad Junction. The area used to have waterlogged streets during the monsoon, but it is now highly commercialized due to the highway and its proximity to the city. The Hilite Township and Hilite Mall have brought more traffic to Palazhi.
Methott Thazham is a small village on the western side of Palazhi, known for the Bhayankavu Temple and the Ollur Shiva Temple. Nearby suburbs include Vazhipokku, Manathal Thazham, Poomangalam, Mecheri Thazham, Kaithaparampu, Kattukulangara, and Kommeri. It connects by a main road to Kottooli and Pottammal junctions.
Hilite Township sits at Palazhi junction, and Hilite Mall is the largest shopping mall in north Kerala, with about 1.4 million square feet of shopping space. It is part of the Hilite City project.
Pantheeramkavu (Pantheerankavu) means “the place with twelve temples.” It is a growing town near Kozhikode with about 45,495 residents. Its literacy rate is 84% (men 86%, women 82%), and about 11% of people are under age 6. The road to the east of Pantheerankavu connects Perumanna, Puthoor Madam, Mundupalam, Punathil Bazar, and Payyadi Meethal, ending at Palazhi, home to Hilite Mall and Hilite Township.
Ramanattukara is the largest town between Kozhikode and the airport. It has two busy road junctions: one toward the airport and Nisari Junction toward the University of Calicut. The town is growing quickly with new malls and the Kadavu Resort, a nearby 5-star hotel. Ramanattukara is a key town for land routes to Thrissur, Trivandrum, Manjeri, and Coimbatore.
