Revolution of 1904
Revolution of 1904: A civic-military revolt in Uruguay led by Aparicio Saravia against the government of José Batlle y Ordóñez. It was the last and bloodiest major conflict between the Blanco (White) and Colorado parties. The government army, about 25,000 strong, defeated the 10,000-strong Blanco forces. Key battles included Guayabos (June 6, 1904), where Blanco forces under Abelardo Márquez were defeated, and Tupambaé, where Saravia faced General Pablo Galarza. Saravia was wounded at Masoller and died days later in Santana do Livramento, Brazil. An armistice was signed on September 24, 1904, ending the fighting with a government victory. Some of Saravia’s sons fought for the revolution, while his brother Basilicio Saravia fought for the government.
