Manuel Antonio de Emparan y Orbe
Manuel Antonio Ramón de Emparan y Orbe (16 March 1754 – 12 July 1801) was a Spanish Navy officer. He came from the noble Emparan y Orbe family, who were lords of Azpeitia and Ermua and Marquises of Valde-Espina. His father was José Joaquín de Emparan and his mother María Ana Orbe y Zarauz.
Manuel had several brothers who also served the Crown: Francisco inherited the family estate; Agustín Ignacio became a knight; Miguel José was a brigadier; Vicente served as governor and captain general of Venezuela; and Pedro de Emparan settled in Venezuela as an alcalde (city mayor) when Vicente governed the province of Cumaná. Through his descendants, the Emparan y Orbe family was connected to notable Venezuelan figures such as Antonio José de Sucre and José Tadeo Monagas.
He was born in Azpeitia and began his naval career as a midshipman in the Cádiz Department on 22 July 1766, as did his brothers José Joaquín (born 1751) and Miguel José (born 1756), who joined on 6 February 1770.
