African butterflyfish
African butterflyfish, Pantodon buchholzi, is a small freshwater fish from West and Central Africa. It has a rounded body and two large wing-like fins that help it glide near the water’s surface. It grows to about 6 inches (15 cm). This species spends most of its time at the surface, feeding mainly on insects that land on the water. It can breathe air, so it needs a tank with a tight lid and good surface oxygen. In the aquarium, give it a tall tank with lots of surface area, gentle filtration, and places to hide. It should be kept with other peaceful, reasonably large fish that won’t fit in its mouth; avoid very small tank mates. Feed it floating foods like live insects, brine shrimp, and floating pellets. In the wild it lives in slow rivers and swamps; in captivity it prefers warm, clean water.
