Adam Powell (director)
Adam Christopher Thurai Powell (born 11 August 1981 in Hammersmith, London) is a British director, editor and photographer who makes music videos across hardcore, rock, hip‑hop and pop. He has directed videos for artists such as Bring Me the Horizon, Example, Jamie T, The 1975 and Charli XCX. He was nominated for Best New Director at the UK Music Video Awards in 2009, and his The 1975 video “UGH!” was nominated for Best Group Video at the MTV VMAs in Japan.
Powell got interested in film by shooting and editing amateur skate videos at home. He started creating low‑budget videos for bands and built his career after joining Black Dog Films and Ridley Scott Associates, becoming one of the UK’s prominent music video directors.
In 2013 he created a music video for Sivu using only MRI imagery, inspired by research into improving outcomes for children born with cleft lip and palate and his interest in capturing images without traditional cameras or lenses.
Beyond directing, Powell has worked as an editor on projects such as Magnetic Man’s “Anthemic” and Vato Gonzalez’s “Badman Riddim (Jump).” He edited Rose McGowan’s directorial debut, the Sundance‑premiered short film Dawn. He also collaborated with Jonas Åkerlund as second unit director on the Rolling Stones’ “Doom and Gloom” and has edited commercials for brands like Lexus, H&M and Johnnie Walker. His work continues to span music videos, film and advertising.
