Active Life: Explorer
Active Life: Explorer is a fitness and party video game for the Nintendo Wii. In Japan and Europe it’s known as Family Trainer: Treasure Adventure. It’s the follow-up to Active Life: Extreme Challenge (2009) and was announced at E3 2010, with a 2010 release in North America (October 19), Japan (October 21), and Europe (October 22).
Gameplay focuses on 24 mini-games with ideas like Jungle, Western, Underwater, and Snowy themes. You can play in Free Play, or as a party game with family and friends. Players can choose a character or create a new one, and Mii characters are supported. The game uses a special Active Life Mat that connects to the Wii through its GameCube controller ports, which means it isn’t compatible with newer Wii models that don’t have those ports.
Treasure Adventure mode challenges you to collect as much treasure as possible while trying to achieve the top score on each quest. Party Mode supports up to 8 players, with game rounds of 5, 10, or 20. After a round, the winner is the player with the most points, and the top 5 scores are shown in the Rankings.
Treasure Trials take you through a series of tests to earn ranks: Rookie, Amateur, Specialist, Professional, Veteran, Master, and Legend. Beating all Treasure Trials unlocks Challenge Missions, where each mini-game offers two extra challenges to practice a skill.
Reception was mixed to positive. It holds about 64.33% on GameRankings. Nintendo World Report’s Pedro Hernandez rated it 8.5/10, calling it an excellent collection of mini-games and a good fitness title.
