A. Sarkunam is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer who works in Tamil cinema. He started as an associate of director A. L. Vijay and made his directing debut with the romantic comedy Kalavani (2009), starring Vimal and Oviya. The film received good reviews and became a sleeper hit. His next movie, Vaagai Sooda Vaa (2011), was a period drama with Vimal and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil; Sarkunam has said it was his first script and his dream project. He then directed Naiyaandi, another romantic comedy with Dhanush and Nazriya Nazim. In 2014 he started a production company, A Sarkunam Cinemaz, with his brother A. Nandha Kumar as producer. Their first production was Manjapai, which marked the directorial debut of Sarkunam’s former assistant N. Raghavan. His fourth film, Chandi Veeran, produced by Bala and starring Atharvaa and Anandhi, released in 2015 and received positive reviews, with many similarities to Kalavani.
