A Royal Divorce (1938 film)
A Royal Divorce is a 1938 British historical drama about the marriage of Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine. Directed by Jack Raymond, the film follows their relationship from their first meeting to their divorce a decade later. It stars Ruth Chatterton as Josephine, Pierre Blanchar as Napoleon, and Carol Goodner.
The story was filmed at Denham Studios in Buckinghamshire, with sets designed by David Rawnsley. The movie runs 85 minutes and is in English. It was produced by Herbert Wilcox for Imperator Films and released by Paramount British Pictures on 21 September 1938. Music is by Anthony Collins, cinematography by Freddie Young, and editing by Peggy Hennessey.
Reception was mixed: TV Guide called it a mediocre adaptation, while AllMovie praised the authentic costumes and settings but noted some factual liberties.
