A Palace Concert
A Palace Concert (Chinese: 宮樂圖) is a Tang dynasty silk painting. It shows ten court ladies and two standing servant maidens around a large rectangular table. Some ladies are drinking tea, others wine. At the far end, four women are likely playing music to liven the scene. The instruments from left to right are bamboo pipes, guqin, pipa, and bili. One servant maid is beating time with a clapper. A small dog sits under the table.
The artist and the exact year are unknown. The painting is in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The hairstyles, floral headdresses, and the overall look reflect Tang dynasty fashion. The scene also shows late Tang customs, including the woven bamboo table, cusped crescent stools, winged wine cups, and a lute played with a large pick.
