Giovanni Procacci
Giovanni Procacci (born May 4, 1955, in Bari) is an Italian politician. He served as a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004, where he was on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and took part in delegations with Southeast Europe and with China. He also sat as a substitute on the Employment and Social Affairs Committee. He was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in the 2006 general election.
Education and career: He earned a degree in literature and philosophy in 1978 and worked as a university lecturer, first non-tenured (1978–1983) and then tenured (1984–1999).
Political life: Procacci has been a member of La Margherita (Democracy is Freedom – La Margherita), which is part of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. He was involved with I Democratici, serving in its national leadership (1996–2001) and executive (1998–2001). He chaired La Margherita’s national leadership (2001–2004) and has been a member of its national executive since 2004.
Local offices: In Bitonto, he was a municipal councillor and the leader of the Democrazia Cristiana group from 1985 to 1990, then Deputy Mayor from 1990 to 1994.
MEP committee work: While in the European Parliament, he worked with the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee from 1999 to 2002 and 2002 to 2004, and with delegations for relations with Southeast Europe (1999–2002) and with China (2002–2004). From December 2004 onward, he was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, and he also served as a substitute on Employment and Social Affairs during parts of his term.
