A Man Called Sloane
A Man Called Sloane is an American secret-agent drama that aired on NBC during the 1979–1980 season. Created by Cliff Gould, it stars Robert Conrad as Thomas R. Sloane III, a freelance spy who sometimes works for UNIT, a secret U.S. intelligence operation led by The Director (Dan O'Herlihy). He is joined by Torque (Ji-Tu Cumbuka), a tough ally with a mechanical hand, and Effie, a computer voiced by Michele Carey. Their enemies are KARTEL, UNIT's sinister rival. The show blended gadgets and styles from The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible, and The Wild Wild West. It was one of the most expensive series of the season but failed to attract a large audience and was canceled after 12 episodes. QM Productions included some unusual choices: there was no opening announcer, the copyright appeared at the end, and episode titles were shown within the credits. The series was produced by Woodruff Productions in association with QM Productions and was the last Quinn Martin company show to debut. In 1981 NBC aired Death Ray 2000, a TV movie that served as the original pilot; it starred Robert Logan as Sloane and featured Cumbuka as Torque. Logan had been the initial choice for Sloane, but the network preferred Conrad.
