2022 Massachusetts ballot measures
Four measures were on the November 8, 2022 ballot in Massachusetts. Here’s a simple summary of what each would do and the results.
1) Millionaires Tax (Fair Share Amendment)
- What it would do: Create a new 4% tax on income over $1 million, with the money directed to infrastructure and education. It would be a constitutional amendment.
- Result: Approved. Yes 52.0%, No 48.0%.
2) Dental Insurance Regulation
- What it would do: Require dental insurers to spend at least 83% of premiums on patient care.
- Result: Approved. Yes 71.5%, No 28.5%.
3) Alcohol License Expansion
- What it would do: Allow more places to sell alcohol but make it harder to get licenses and increase penalties for violations.
- Result: Rejected. Yes 44.7%, No 55.3%.
4) Driver’s Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants
- What it would do: Allow undocumented immigrants to hold driver’s licenses.
- Result: Approved. Yes 53.7%, No 46.3%
Context: Massachusetts can put laws or amendments on the ballot through petitions, and lawmakers can pass veto referendums to challenge laws. In 2022, four measures were certified for the ballot (one constitutional amendment, two proposed laws, one veto referendum) and additional measures failed to qualify.
