1887 Liverpool Exchange by-election
The 1887 Liverpool Exchange by-election took place on 26 January 1887 after the death of the sitting Liberal MP David Duncan. Liberal Ralph Neville won the seat by a very narrow margin of 7 votes.
At that time, George Goschen was Chancellor of the Exchequer. He had left the Liberal Party over Irish Home Rule in 1886 and joined the Liberal Unionists. He had lost his Edinburgh East seat in the 1886 general election. When the government under the Marquess of Salisbury took office, Goschen was appointed Chancellor on 14 January 1887, becoming the only Liberal Unionist in a largely Conservative government. Because he was not in the House of Commons, Goschen stood in the Liverpool Exchange by-election to try to return to Parliament.
