30th United States Congress
30th United States Congress (March 4, 1847 – March 4, 1849) was the federal legislature meeting in Washington, D.C., during the end of President James K. Polk’s term. It used the 1840 census for representation: 60 senators and 230 representatives, plus 2 non-voting delegates. The Senate was Democratic and the House was Whig. The Senate President was George M. Dallas (Democrat). The Speaker of the House was Robert C. Winthrop (Whig). The two sessions were: December 6, 1847 – August 14, 1848; and December 4, 1848 – March 3, 1849. Wisconsin joined as a new state, adding two Senate seats and two House seats. This is the only Congress in which Abraham Lincoln served. Membership is listed by chamber and state, with senators by class and representatives by district; changes are counted from the start of the first session. Committees and party leaders are documented.
