German submarine U-884
German submarine U-884 was a Nazi Germany Type IXD/42 U-boat built during World War II. It was ordered on 2 April 1942 and built by DeSchiMAG AG Weser in Bremen. The keel was laid on 29 August 1943, and the submarine was launched on 17 May 1944. It was never commissioned and was badly damaged by United States bombs on 30 March 1945.
U-884 was a larger version of the IX series. It had a surface displacement of about 1,616 tons and 1,804 tons when submerged. The total length was 87.58 meters, with a pressure hull length of 68.50 meters and a beam of 7.50 meters. The boat could dive to depths of up to 200 meters. It was powered by two MAN diesel engines for surface running and two electric motors for submerged propulsion, giving a maximum surface speed of 19.2 knots and a submerged speed of 6.9 knots. Its range was 31,500 nautical miles at 10 knots on the surface or 121 nautical miles at 2 knots when submerged.
Armament included six 53.3 cm torpedo tubes (four bow, two stern) with 24 torpedoes, one 10.5 cm deck gun, a 3.7 cm Flak M42 anti-aircraft gun, and two 2 cm AA guns. The crew complement was 55 men.
Fate: After being launched, U-884 was never commissioned and was heavily damaged by American bombing on 30 March 1945.
