29 September 2024 Israeli attacks on Yemen
On 29 September 2024, Israel carried out airstrikes on Yemen’s Red Sea ports of Al Hudaydah (Hodeidah) and Ras Isa, both in areas controlled by the Houthis. The attacks used fighter jets, and six people were killed with more than 57 wounded. The strikes caused power outages in Hodeidah and damaged port facilities and a power station.
Israel said the attacks were in response to a Houthi ballistic missile fired at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv the day before, which Israel intercepted. The Houthis said they attacked to show solidarity with Gaza and Lebanon and vowed to continue until Israeli aggression stops.
The Houthis (Ansar Allah) are a Shiite movement that has controlled parts of Yemen since 2014 and has fought a Saudi-led coalition since 2015. They have attacked shipping in the Red Sea, prompting international concern and a US-led mission to protect Red Sea shipping since January 2024. In July 2024, Israel also attacked Hodeidah after a Houthi drone strike on Tel Aviv. Iran condemned the latest strikes, while Israel defended them as targeting military facilities.
