Roger James Hnatiuk (born 1946) is a Canadian‑Australian botanist who studies biogeography and plant ecology. He earned honours in botany and an MSc at the University of Alberta, and a PhD in biogeography from the Australian National University. He did plant ecology work in Western Australia and led major programs at the Australian Biological Resources Study, including the Flora of Australia and the Australian Biogeographic Information System. He helped create the Census of Australian Vascular Plants. From 1989 to 1992 he directed the Australian National Botanic Gardens. He later studied forestry and sustainable use of natural resources at the Bureau of Rural Sciences. He loves bonsai and helped start exhibitions of Australian native plants as bonsai at the National Botanic Gardens. In 2006 he became the first chair of the Bonsai Management Committee for Australia’s National Bonsai and Penjing Collection in Canberra. A lichen, Thelotrema hnatiukii, was named in his honour in 2010.
