2022–23 Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. season
Brighton & Hove Albion's 2022–23 season was their 121st year as a club and their sixth straight in the Premier League. They also competed in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. Brighton finished sixth in the Premier League, which earned them a place in European football for the first time in the club’s history (the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League). It was the highest league finish the club has ever achieved, beating the previous best of ninth.
Season overview
- The club began the season with Graham Potter as head coach, but he left to take charge of Chelsea on 8 September. Andrew Crofts served as interim head coach with Adam Lallana acting as interim first-team coach. Roberto De Zerbi was appointed head coach on 18 September.
- Brighton’s first game under De Zerbi ended in a 3–3 draw at Liverpool on 1 October, with Leandro Trossard scoring all three Brighton goals—the club’s first Premier League hat-trick.
- The team also faced a 1–0 home loss to Leeds after an early nine-game unbeaten run in the top flight, which began after their 2–1 win at Manchester United and a 4–0 win in the previous season’s final home game.
- On 29 October, Brighton defeated Chelsea 4–1 at Falmer Stadium, De Zerbi’s first win in charge against his former club.
- Mid-season included a winter training camp in Dubai during the World Cup break, and eight Brighton players headed to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
- In the FA Cup, Brighton beat Liverpool to reach the fifth round, then reached the semi-finals for the first time. They were eliminated by Manchester United on penalties at Wembley.
- A few days after the semi-final, Brighton lost 3–1 to Nottingham Forest away.
- The club’s biggest league win came with a 6–0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on 29 April. Their heaviest league defeat was 5–1 to Everton on 8 May.

- Top scorer: Alexis Mac Allister, with 12 goals in all competitions (10 in the league).
- Evan Ferguson made history on 31 December by scoring his first Premier League goal, becoming Brighton’s youngest ever league scorer.
- Leandro Trossard left Brighton for Arsenal in January 2023.
- Other notable departures included Neal Maupay to Everton and Shane Duffy’s move to Fulham on loan (later made permanent), along with several loan moves and exits.
- In goalkeeping, Jason Steele started getting more Premier League game time under De Zerbi, including a clean sheet and strong performances.

End of season
Brighton finished sixth in the Premier League and earned a historic spot in European competition for the first time, entering the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League. The season closed with a 2–1 defeat at Aston Villa on 28 May.
