Almost Is Never Enough
Almost Is Never Enough is a duet by Ariana Grande and English singer Nathan Sykes. It’s a pop-soul ballad written by Carmen Reece, Al Sherrod Lambert, Moses Ayo Samuels, Olaniyi Michael Akinkunmi, Ariana Grande, and produced by Harmony Samuels.
Two official versions exist. A shorter version appears on the 2013 The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones soundtrack, released August 19, 2013, by Republic Records as a second promotional single after Colbie Caillat’s “When the Darkness Comes.” A longer version was later included on Grande’s debut album, Yours Truly (2013). The soundtrack version is about 3:30 long, while the album version runs about 5:28.
The song was recorded in 2011 at Powerhouse Studios in London and London Bridge Studios in Los Angeles. It is in the key of D major, with the two vocalists spanning from F#3 to D6.
Critics generally praised the duet, calling it soulful and well produced, and noting how well Grande and Sykes sing together. Some comparisons were made to classic collaborations by Mariah Carey with Boyz II Men and Brandy with Wanya Morris.
