China’s forces in the 2020–2021 India skirmishes were led by General Zhang Xudong. In Eastern Ladakh, the 362nd and 363rd Border Defence Regiments were deployed, with companies stationed at Khurnak Fort, Spanggur Tso, and Kongka La near Gogra/Hot Springs. A patrol boat squadron operated on Pangong Tso. The regiments set up pickets as the clashes continued.

In April 2020, the 4th (Highland) Motorised Infantry Division and the 6th (Highland) Mechanised Infantry Division of the Western Theatre Command carried out pre-planned exercises in the Gobi Desert and Aksai Chin, then moved toward the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. They remained there from May 2020 to February 2021, after which they rotated with the 8th and 11th Motorised Divisions. About 90% of China’s deployment in Ladakh was rotated. During the standoff, modernization work continued in Xinjiang.
