Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery
Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery (KACTG) is a small museum in Kampong Ayer, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. It opened on 19 August 2009 and is run by Brunei’s Tourism Development Department. The gallery is located in Kampong Lorong Sikuna and covers about 565 square feet (52.5 square meters).
The gallery was built from August 2007 to June 2009 as part of Brunei’s 2007–2012 National Development Plan, costing about B$3 million. It was founded by Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, who officially launched it in 2009.
What you’ll see: The exhibits focus on Kampong Ayer’s crafts and daily life, including ceramics, woodworking, weaving, and other artefacts. There are five sections about the village’s history, customs, and people, plus a touch screen with more information about nearby sites. An observation tower modeled after a traditional Malay house offers wide views, and a central hexagonal stage showcases Bruneian weaving.
Purpose and activities: The gallery preserves Kampong Ayer’s heritage and acts as a center for promoting local handicrafts. It hosts demonstrations and supports local businesses. It also runs temporary exhibitions and events, such as the Kampong Ayer Walking Trail in 2019, Green Horizons: Sustain and Change in 2023, Tourism and Sustainable Investments in 2023, and Warisan Bruneiku in 2024.
Walking trail: The Tourism Development Department created a walking trail starting at the gallery and passing through five villages: Kampong Lorong Sikuna, Kampong Setia ’A’, Kampong Tamoi Ujung, Kampong Peramu, and Kampong Bakut Berumput. The trail promotes locally produced goods and services while showcasing the area’s history and culture.
