2017 Brownlow Medal
The 2017 Brownlow Medal was the 90th award given to the AFL player judged the fairest and best during the home-and-away season. Dustin Martin of Richmond won with a record 36 votes. The voting works by three field umpires per match, who award 3 votes to the best player, 2 to the second-best, and 1 to the third-best; all votes are kept secret until the night of the ceremony. For much of the season, Martin and 2016 winner Patrick Dangerfield were the standout midfielders, but Dangerfield became ineligible in Round 19 after a one-week suspension for a dangerous tackle, leaving Martin as the favourite. Going into the count, Martin was a clear favourite at about $1.08. The ceremony was held at Crown Palladium on 25 September, hosted by Bruce McAvaney, and broadcast by the Seven Network. Martin’s 36 votes stood as a record at the time, a mark later matched by Ollie Wines in 2021 and surpassed by Patrick Cripps in 2024.
