Agnes Fong Sock Har
Agnes Fong Sock Har (born 1946) is a Singaporean former military officer. In 1967 she left a clerical job at the Ministry of Defence to join National Service after the first conscripts were called up. She, along with Nancy Tan Soo Keow and Patricia Koh Kim Toh, volunteered and was commissioned as an officer after completing an officer cadet course. In her early years she worked in logistics and faced gender bias, often being given tasks she felt did not suit an officer.
She rose through the ranks and, as a Captain, made history in 1979 by becoming the first woman to command a unit in the Singapore Armed Forces when she took charge of the 1st Air Supply Base. This milestone gave her more opportunities to develop her leadership and analytical skills. She retired as a Major in 1992 after more than 25 years of service. In 2014 she was inducted into the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame, which honors pioneering Singaporean women.
