Centre for Food Safety (CFS) is the Hong Kong government’s food safety authority. Its job is to keep food safe by working with the government, the food industry, and consumers.

The CFS was formed on 2 May 2006 and is part of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, under the Environment and Ecology Bureau. It was created after 2005 food safety problems, including an outbreak of Streptococcus suis and freshwater fish contaminated with malachite green. There were plans to have a separate agency for food safety, bringing together experts from different fields, similar to the Centre for Health Protection. But the proposal was rejected by the Legislative Council on 18 January 2006 due to concerns about marginalising veterinarians and unclear duties.

In the early days, some lawmakers said the centre was not doing enough to control food safety. The CFS logo uses the department’s orange color with green to symbolize safety and hope, and the letters C, F, and S stand for Centre for Food Safety.

Headquarters are at 43/F Queensway Government Offices, 66 Queensway, Hong Kong. The centre is led by a Controller.
