The 2014 North Miami mayoral special election was held after Mayor Lucie Tondreau was indicted on mortgage fraud and suspended by Governor Rick Scott. A primary took place on August 26, 2014, with three candidates: Kevin Burns (former mayor), Jean Marcellus (former city councilman), and Smith Joseph (physician). In the primary, Burns led with about 44.9% of the vote, Joseph had about 37.8%, and Marcellus about 17.3%, sending Burns and Joseph to a runoff. The runoff was on November 4, 2014, and Joseph won 54.36% to Burns' 45.64%. Smith Joseph became mayor to serve the remainder of Tondreau's term, with Philippe Bien-Aime serving as acting mayor beforehand. All candidates were listed as nonpartisan.
