2009 US Open (tennis)
The 2009 US Open took place from August 31 to September 14, 2009, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York, on outdoor hard courts. Rain extended the event by one day, delaying several matches.
In the men’s singles final, Juan Martín del Potro of Argentina defeated Roger Federer in five sets to win his first US Open title. The match ended 3–6, 7–6(7–5), 4–6, 7–6(7–4), 6–2. Del Potro became the third Argentine to win the US Open and the first South American to win a Grand Slam on a hard court.
In the women’s singles final, Kim Clijsters, returning from retirement with a wild card, defeated Caroline Wozniacki 7–5, 6–3. Clijsters had beaten defending champion Serena Williams in the semifinals in a controversial match and became the first unseeded wildcard to win the US Open, as well as the first mother to win a Grand Slam since 1980.

- Men’s doubles: Lukáš Dlouhý / Leander Paes defeated Mahesh Bhupathi / Mark Knowles in three sets.
- Women’s doubles: Serena Williams / Venus Williams defeated Cara Black / Liezel Huber 6–2, 6–2.
- Mixed doubles: Carly Gullickson / Travis Parrott defeated Cara Black / Leander Paes 6–2, 6–4.
