The 2006 Tour of Britain ran from August 29 to September 3. It was a six-stage race across Great Britain, covering 870.5 km (540.9 mi). The race started in Glasgow and finished at The Mall in London.

Stage highlights:
- Stage 1 featured an early breakaway of three riders who stayed ahead of the main group by about 2.5 minutes, and the stage ended with a sprint among the peloton.
- Goss moved into the overall lead by collecting sprint bonuses, taking the lead from Pedersen.
- In a later stage, strong crosswinds split the field. Pedersen’s team tried to help him regain the lead, but Filippo Pozzato broke away and finished ahead near the end.
- In another stage, a group broke away early and remained away from the peloton.
- On the penultimate stage, Manning led at the final roundabout but was directed the wrong way and lost the stage. The riders then went on strike over security issues, but they soon resumed and finished with a mass sprint.
- The final stage had several breakaways, but all were brought back and it also finished with a mass sprint.
