Broken Dreams, Inc
Broken Dreams, Inc is a song by Rise Against, released on September 16, 2020. It was the lead single for the Dark Nights: Death Metal soundtrack and later became the first single from the band's ninth album, Nowhere Generation. The track runs 3 minutes and 53 seconds and sits in the hardcore punk/melodic hardcore style. It was written by Tim McIlrath, Joe Principe, Brandon Barnes, and Zach Blair, and produced by Bill Stevenson, Jason Livermore, Andrew Berlin, and Chris Beeble for Loma Vista.
The song talks about unequal opportunities in America and argues that power should be in the hands of everyday people, not corporations. McIlrath says the message is about disrupting the system to level the playing field and value people and communities over profit.
Both McIlrath and guitarist Zach Blair are longtime DC Comics fans, which thrilled the band to collaborate on the Dark Nights: Death Metal series. McIlrath also lent his voice to Lobo in the Sonic Metalverse project. The song received positive early feedback, with Kerrang! calling it brilliant, and American Songwriter highlighting the band’s social awareness.
A music video accompanied the release, featuring artwork by DC Comics artist Greg Capullo and visuals from the Dark Nights: Death Metal series. The clip includes appearances by DC icons like Batman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Superman, Aquaman, The Flash, Darkseid, and Green Lantern, with character monologues tied to the series’ themes.
