2001 Portland Timbers season

The 2001 season was the Timbers’ first in the A-League, the second tier of soccer in the United States and Canada. It was the third Timbers club to carry the name. The team was led by CEO Marshall Glickman and head coach Bobby Howe, and played its home games at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon.

In the league, the Timbers finished fourth in their conference. They made the playoffs but were eliminated in the quarterfinals after receiving a bye into that round.

In the U.S. Open Cup, Portland entered in the second round and advanced to that round.

Mark Baena was the club’s top scorer, with 13 goals in league play and 15 in all competitions.

Attendance highlights included a season-high 12,295 fans at home against Seattle on May 11 and a season-low 2,999 against Minnesota on June 6. The average home league attendance was 6,124, while overall average attendance for all competitions was 5,840.
