2000 Bundamba state by-election

A by-election for the Queensland Legislative Assembly seat of Bundamba was held on 5 February 2000 after Labor MP Bob Gibbs resigned. It was held on the same day as the Woodridge by-election. Labor kept Bundamba, with Jo-Ann Miller elected as the new member.

Bob Gibbs first entered Parliament in 1977 as the Labor member for Wolston. When Wolston was abolished in 1992, Bundamba was created and Gibbs won it, holding the seat thereafter. Bundamba was usually a safe Labor seat, but the rise of One Nation in 1998 made the contest closer; Gibbs won with 56.2% of the two-party preferred vote.

On 14 December 2000, Gibbs announced he would resign to become Queensland’s North American Trade Commissioner. In this by-election there was no One Nation candidate; Heather Hill stood for the breakaway One Nation faction that would later become the City Country Alliance, and the major parties’ shares of the vote increased as a result. Bundamba remained a safe Labor seat.

Labor’s retention of Bundamba and Woodridge meant Peter Beattie’s government kept a one-seat majority in Parliament.
