Digimon Data Squad, known in Japan as Digimon Savers, is the fifth Digimon anime series by Toei Animation. It aired in Japan on Fuji TV from April 2, 2006, to March 25, 2007, and has 48 episodes. A standalone film based on the series released on December 9, 2006, and two other films followed: Digimon Savers 3D: The Digital World in Imminent Danger! (7 minutes) and Ultimate Power! Activate Burst Mode!! (22 minutes). An English-dubbed version produced by Studiopolis with Toei Animation USA and Disney Enterprises aired in North America on Toon Disney’s Jetix block from October 2007 to November 2008. A complete US collection was released by Cinedigm in 2014, with Madman Entertainment releasing Region 4 DVDs in Australia and New Zealand.

Plot:
The Digital Accident Tactics Squad (DATS) is a government group that protects both the Real World and the Digital World and helps Digimon return home. Marcus, a junior high student, joins DATS and learns that Merukimon, a Digimon, opposes humans. A scientist named Akihiro Kurata invades the Digital World and convinces the government that Digimon are dangerous. He uses the powerful Belphemon, and Marcus defeats him. Before dying, Kurata triggers a plan to merge the Digital World with the Real World. BanchoLeomon stops the merger, and Marcus meets King Drasil (Yggdrasil), who wants to destroy humanity to protect the Digital World. Marcus discovers his father Spencer has been trapped in the Digital World for ten years because Drasil possessed him. After Marcus defeats Drasil, Spencer’s soul returns to his body, and both worlds are restored. Five years later, Marcus and his friends look to their futures. The Royal Knights are minions of King Drasil and include Kentaurosmon and other powerful Digimon.

Production notes:
The series was announced at Jump Festa 2005 with a remolded Agumon as the lead Digimon. It was designed by Sayo Aoi and is the last Digimon series to be produced in 4:3 aspect ratio. The staff included director Naoyuki Itō and other Toei Animation veterans, with an English dub crew connected to Digimon: Digital Monsters.
