1998 Swedish Rally
1998 International Swedish Rally (Round 2 of the 1998 World Rally Championship) was held in Karlstad, Sweden, from 6 to 8 February. The 19-stage event saw 78 starters and 42 finishers. Tommi Mäkinen driving for Mitsubishi Ralliart won his first WRC victory of the season, beating Carlos Sainz’s Toyota Corolla WRC and Juha Kankkunen’s Ford Escort WRC to complete a podium sweep by current and former champions. Local favorite Thomas Rådström led much of the rally but crashed on stage 12, allowing Mäkinen to grab the lead. Colin McRae retired on stage 12 due to electrical problems with his Subaru Impreza WRC. In the PWRC, Stig-Olov Walfridson won. Gustavo Trelles, the Uruguayan defending champion, retired on Stage 2 with engine failure, the second rally in a row he failed to finish. Third place overall went to Juha Kankkunen.
