1994 New Orleans mayoral election
The 1994 New Orleans mayoral election was held with an open primary on February 5, 1994, and a runoff on March 5, 1994. Incumbent mayor Sidney Barthelemy was barred from a third term, so the race was wide open. The main candidates were Marc Morial (Democratic), Donald Mintz (Democratic), and Mitch Landrieu (Democratic), along with a few others. The campaign focused on crime and city problems, and it featured some personal attacks. After a lengthy campaign, the top two finishers, Mintz and Morial, went to a runoff because no one won a majority in the first round. In the runoff, Marc Morial defeated Donald Mintz to become mayor.
