1991 Caribbean Series
The 1991 Caribbean Series was the 33rd edition of the baseball tournament. It ran February 2–9 in Miami at Bobby Maduro Stadium. The four champion teams were Tigres del Licey (Dominican Republic), Potros de Tijuana (Mexico), Cangrejeros de Santurce (Puerto Rico), and Cardenales de Lara (Venezuela). The final drew 7,742 fans in an 11,500-seat stadium, a big improvement after the previous year’s poorly attended event at the Orange Bowl. This was the last Caribbean Series held in the United States until 2024.
The format started with a six-game round robin where each team played the others once, followed by a three-game playoff and a best-of-three final. Licey, managed by John Roseboro, went undefeated to win the title, the Dominican club’s second Caribbean Series crown (their first was in 1971). They dominated the series, scoring 50 runs and allowing only 8. In the round robin, Licey beat Puerto Rico 8–2, Mexico 4–0, and Venezuela 12–1; in the later rounds they defeated Venezuela 13–4 and 13–1.
Top hitters were Gerónimo Berroa (.479) and Jerry Brooks (.473); other notable contributors included Henry Rodríguez, Andújar Cedeño, and Francisco Cabrera. The pitching staff was led by Mélido Pérez (2–0, 0.00 ERA in 12 innings); Juan Guzmán (1–0, 2.35 ERA) and Efraín Valdez (1–0, 0.00 ERA) also pitched well, supported by a strong bullpen.
The other three teams each finished 1–2 in the round robin, which led to a semifinal where Venezuela defeated both Mexico and Puerto Rico once. Venezuela’s Cardenales de Lara included players such as Luis Sojo, Willie Banks, Derek Bell, Giovanni Carrara, Mike Timlin, and Mark Whiten. The Potros de Tijuana earned their only win by beating Venezuela 3–0, highlighted by a 10-hit attack; their roster included Matías Carrillo, Vinny Castilla, Tommy Hinzo, José Tolentino and Ray Torres. Puerto Rico’s Cangrejeros de Santurce, despite a strong lineup, beat only Tijuana 6–1.
