Dr. Elizur Hale House
The Dr. Elizur Hale House is a historic home at 3181 Hebron Avenue in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Built about 1780, it is a well-preserved example of late Georgian domestic architecture and is notable for its long association with the Hale family, who lived there for about 100 years. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
The house sits on the north side of Hebron Avenue (Route 94), between Hill Street and Ridge Road. It is a 2 1/2-story wooden structure with a side-gable roof, central chimney, and clapboard exterior. The main facade is five bays wide with a centered entrance that has an eight-light transom window above it. Inside, the main rooms follow a typical center-chimney layout, with a narrow entry and winding staircase, and parlor spaces to either side. The original kitchen lies behind the chimney, with small rooms at the rear corners. A 19th-century rear ell extends the house and provides modern amenities.
Elizur Hale was the son of Captain Jonathan Hale and Sarah Talcott Hale. He graduated from Yale in 1742, studied medicine, and settled in Glastonbury to practice. He also served the town politically, representing Glastonbury in the General Assembly. Contemporary descriptions portray him as dignified, witty, benevolent, and generous with his property and help to those in need. He married Abigail Hollister on March 23, 1790, and they had five sons. Their son Elizur was also a doctor in Glastonbury, and he died on December 6, 1796.
