1980 Portland, Oregon mayoral elections
Two Portland mayoral elections were held on May 20, 1980. One was a special election to finish the current term, ending January 3, 1981, and the other was a regular election for a full term starting that day. City commissioner Frank Ivancie defeated acting mayor Connie McCready in both races. Because Ivancie won a majority in the regular-term election, no runoff was needed. In the regular election, Ivancie received 64,354 votes (53.18%) to McCready’s 50,617 votes (41.83%). In the special election, Ivancie had 64,143 votes (52.55%) while McCready received 52,812 votes (43.27%). Portland uses a nonpartisan system for local elections, so candidates appear on the ballot without party labels. Although listed as nonpartisan, Ivancie was effectively a conservative Democrat and McCready a Republican. This was the last Portland mayoral election to feature a major Republican candidate.
