1979 in India
The year was mainly about political changes. The Janata Party government led by Morarji Desai fell apart, and Desai resigned in July 1979. Charan Singh became prime minister in July, but his government lasted only a few months because he couldn’t secure enough support in Parliament. By the end of the year, the country was heading toward general elections. In 1980, Indira Gandhi and the Congress (I) won the elections, and Gandhi returned as prime minister.
