Canon EF 28-105mm lens
The Canon EF 28–105mm lenses are affordable standard zooms for Canon EOS cameras. They cover a useful range from wide to short telephoto and were common kit lenses. The lineup includes the basic 28–105mm f/4–5.6 and a higher-quality 28–105mm f/3.5–4.5 USM. All versions have been discontinued. Some models are marked MACRO, but they are not true macro lenses, offering only about 1:5.2 magnification.
The f/3.5–4.5 USM version uses a ring USM autofocus motor for fast, quiet AF and supports full-time manual focus. The lens uses internal focusing, so the front element doesn’t rotate when focusing. It also uses a duo cam zoom barrel for a more compact design that still doesn’t rotate during zooming.
Versions
- Original (until 1999): 5-blade diaphragm, 15 elements, made in Japan.
- Version II (1999–2002): 7-blade aperture, 15 elements in 12 groups, metal parts in many zoom components, MACRO label, “LENS MADE IN JAPAN” stamped on the bezel. Later versions added “II USM” and “Made in Japan.”
- Version III (2003–2010): Made in Taiwan, 7-blade aperture, MACRO label, textured case, “II” on the bezel, “Made in Taiwan” on the base.
- Later cost-cut variant (last years): gold lettering replaced with white lettering on the case.
Two cheaper variants exist that look similar to the EF-S 18–55mm or the 90–300mm. They sell for about $100 less but have a reduced maximum aperture and cheaper build, including a chrome-plated ring.
Autofocus motors by version
- The original 28–105mm f/4–5.6 uses a DC motor.
- The 28–105mm f/4–5.6 II uses micro-USM.
- The 28–105mm f/3.5–4.5 USM uses ring USM.
