1972 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election
Elections to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly were held in January 1972. There were 2,297,951 registered voters, with a turnout of 62.17%. The Indian National Congress (R) won the most votes and formed the government, with Syed Mir Qasim continuing as Chief Minister. A notable outcome of the election was the first entry of women into the assembly: ten women filed nominations, six contested, and four won seats, making up about 5.33% of the assembly.
