1955 Ice Hockey World Championships
The 1955 Ice Hockey World Championships were the 22nd edition of the tournament and took place in West Germany, in the cities of Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Krefeld and Cologne, from February 25 to March 6, 1955. Fourteen nations competed—the most yet in the postwar era—so the teams were split into Pool A (the top nine) and Pool B (the remaining five teams plus West Germany B, whose games were unofficial).
Canada, represented by the Penticton Vees, won its 16th world title. The Soviet Union and Canada had gone through the tournament undefeated until the final game, which Canada won 5–0 to claim gold and leave the Soviets with silver. Czechoslovakia earned bronze, performing well against weaker teams, drawing with the United States, and narrowly defeating Sweden.
There was some controversy in Canada about participating under the current setup, with concerns that the competition was taking on political and religious implications in Europe. West Germany B games were unofficial.
Overall statistics showed 36 games played, 319 goals scored (about 8.86 per game), and total attendance of 153,300 (about 4,258 per game). The tournament's scoring leader was Vlastimil Bubník with 17 goals.
