1953 North Down by-election
1953 North Down by-election
The by-election was held on 15 April 1953 after the death of Ulster Unionist MP Walter Smiles in the sinking of the MV Princess Victoria during the North Sea flood of 1953. His daughter, Patricia Ford, was the Ulster Unionist candidate and was unopposed, so she held the seat. Ford became the first woman to sit as an Ulster Unionist MP. She stood down at the 1955 general election.
