Silverton Siege (2022)

Silverton Siege is a South African action thriller directed by Mandla Dube. Based on a real 1980 hostage siege in Silverton, Pretoria, the film follows three MK freedom fighters as they take a bank hostage and demand Nelson Mandela’s release. It was released on Netflix on April 27, 2022.

Plot
Three anti-apartheid freedom fighters—Calvin Khumalo, Terra Mabunda, and Aldo Erasmus—plan to sabotage a petrol depot near Silverton, but the police are tipped off. Forced to flee, they end up at Volkskas Bank in Pretoria, where a tense standoff unfolds. Calvin speaks to the hostages, urging cooperation to avoid harm. The trio demands Mandela be pardoned and released, and they burn money outside to draw attention. A mole in the police and rising tensions complicate the situation. Inside the bank, Christine, the supervisor, displays compassion while the fighters try to navigate race, loyalty, and fear. The siege escalates as a white supremacist pilot is revealed, a fellow fighter is killed, and the group fights to protect hostages. Eventually SWAT teams arrive. A dramatic turn of events leads to Mandela’s supposed release, but the hostages begin to leave as Calvin and Terra fight to end the stand on their own terms. In the end, the fighters are killed, and the film notes that Mandela was eventually released ten years later and became South Africa’s first black president.
