1950 World Snooker Championship
The 1950 World Snooker Championship was a professional tournament that ran from 12 December 1949 to 18 March 1950. The final took place at the Tower Circus in Blackpool, England. A qualifying event was held at the Guild Hall in Battersea, London, from 17 October to 12 November 1949. Kingsley Kennerley won the qualifying competition and joined eight other players in the main draw.
The final was a rematch of the previous year, with Walter Donaldson (Scotland) defeating Fred Davis (England) 51–46 to win his second and last world title. Donaldson built a big lead of 49–42 with six frames left and then held on to win. The tournament’s highest break was 101, made by Davis in the semi-final against George Chenier. Chenier also made a 100 in the quarter-final against Peter Mans.
The World Snooker Championship is the official world championship of snooker. The event in 1950 continued the long tradition of top-level competition that began in the 1920s, with the title decided over many frames in a longer match. Donaldson’s victory marked his second world title, confirming his place among snooker’s champions.
