1950 United States Senate elections in Kentucky
Two United States Senate elections were held in Kentucky on November 7, 1950 for the Class 3 seat. After Senator Alben Barkley resigned in 1949 to become Vice President, Governor Earle Clements appointed Garrett L. Withers to fill the vacancy until an election could decide who would finish the term. The same day also included a regular election for the next six-year term. Clements ran in both races and faced Republican Charles I. Dawson, a former judge, in each contest. Clements won the regular election with 334,249 votes (54.2%) to Dawson’s 278,368 (45.1%), and he also won the special election to complete Barkley’s term. Thus Earle Clements served as the U.S. Senator from Kentucky after the elections.
