University of Manitoba Students' Union
The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) is the undergraduate student government for the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. It began in 1919, replacing the earlier Students’ Association from 1914, and it is governed by The University of Manitoba Students’ Union Act. Its main office is in the UMSU University Centre on the Fort Garry campus.
UMSU represents more than 27,000 students and is funded by mandatory student fees included in tuition. For the 2024-2025 year, the mandatory UMSU fee is $136.90 per term, with about $69.61 going to UMSU itself. The executive and other student representatives are chosen in the annual UMSU General Election.
The leadership includes a five-member executive: a president and four vice-presidents (Finance, External, University, and Student Life). The President oversees UMSU’s operations and acts as a university spokesperson. The UMSU Board of Directors includes faculty, schools, residences, and five community representatives (for women-identifying students, international students, students with disabilities, LGBTQ students, and Indigenous students).
UMSU runs seven student businesses in the University Centre and supports several non-business services, such as the Gallery of Student Art, the Grocery Run, a Food Bank, CJUM-FM (UMFM), and The Manitoban student newspaper. It also funds scholarships, travel grants, and student programs, and collaborates with Nimbus Learning for peer tutoring. UMSU is involved in student health and insurance programs through dedicated committees and services.
The union is a member of the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) and the Manitoba Alliance of Post-Secondary Students (MAPSS). Committees cover governance, finance, member services, UPass, and health and dental plans, with student and executive members helping run them. UMSU executives often serve on the University of Manitoba’s Senate and Board of Governors.
